This website uses a variety of terms that you may not be familiar with. Hopefully this page will help answer any questions you might have about certain terms found on this website.

Other Names for Pit Bulls

Breed Standard Terms

Conformation means the way a dog conforms to the standard. Conformation shows judge the dog on the breed standard.

Cropped ears means ears that are cut and set to stand.

Uncropped ears is another name for the natural ear uncut ear set.

Health Terms

HD (Hip Displaysia) is a degenerative joint disease where the ball and socket of the hip do not fit together properly because of either a socket that is too shallow, a ball that is malformed, or a combo of both which leads to arthritis and pain in the joint. Some cases are mild but in severe cases it can be debilitating.

Ataxia is a neurological disorder that usually shows up if it is an issue when a dog is between 2- 5 years old and initially has similar symptoms to an ear infection whereas the dog appears clumsy then gets progressively worse to where they fall down and have difficulty breathing.

Brucellosis can be sexually transmitted in dogs during a mating which can cause infection, a female to miscarry litters and also can cause a dog to become infertile.

Breeding

Bloodlines

Bloodlines are established pedigrees of related dogs bred to meet a specific goal and standard which take years to develop. They are done through linebreeding and inbreeding with sometimes an occasional outcross. Some examples would be OFRN which stands for Old Family Red Nose, Hemphill, Wallace, Jeep, Kingfish, Clouse, Tudor Colbt etc

However things such as blue nose and red nose are NOT bloodlines or different types of APBTs those are just colors.

Breeding Terms

Linebreeding: Breeding within a bloodline closely but not as close as inbreeding.

Outcrossing: Breeding two linebred dogs of unrelated lines.

Inbreeding: Breeding brother to sister, mother to son and father to daughter.

Scatterbreeding: Breeding dogs that have bloodlines that are all over the place not related in any way and many different lines which produces the least consistent of all the types of breeding .

Gamebred: dogs that were bred from game tested parents or heritage close to the front of their pedigree.
